How it is calculated

  • Billable hours = working days × hours per day × share of billable time.
  • Hourly rate = (target profit + business costs) ÷ billable hours.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the price for my clients?

It is the lower limit for your plan to work out. Your price also depends on the market, your experience and the value for your clients.

Why is the hourly rate so much higher than an employee wage?

As a self-employed person you pay insurance and retirement savings on your own, have costs and cannot bill every working hour.

Does VAT belong in the hourly rate?

No. You calculate net and add VAT on the invoice – unless you are a Kleinunternehmer.
