XRechnung or ZUGFeRD?
ZUGFeRD
A PDF that people can read, with the invoice data attached as XML (EN 16931 profile). Handy if your customer also wants to look at the invoice.
XRechnung
A pure XML file following the German XRechnung 3.0 standard, in either CII or UBL syntax. Public-sector clients usually expect this format and a Leitweg-ID.

- Reverse charge and supplies abroad will follow later.
- The invoice itself (PDF and XML) is created in German.
- You are responsible for the content of the invoice – such as the description of services and the VAT rate.
Frequently asked questions
Is the e-invoice generator really free?
Yes. You do not need an account or a sign-up. You can create a limited number of invoices per hour, to prevent abuse.
Is my invoice data stored?
No. Your details are only processed to create and check the file, and are discarded afterwards. Keep the downloaded file yourself.
How is the e-invoice checked?
With the official KoSIT validator (XRechnung 3.0) and the Mustang validator; for ZUGFeRD, veraPDF also checks the PDF/A-3. The download only starts if all checks pass.
Which format should I choose?
If your customer has no requirements, ZUGFeRD is often the simplest choice, because the PDF is also readable. If your customer asks for an XRechnung – for example as a public-sector client –, choose XRechnung and enter the Leitweg-ID as the buyer reference.
Can I create an e-invoice as a small business (Kleinunternehmer)?
Yes. Small businesses (Kleinunternehmer, § 19 UStG) are exempt from issuing e-invoices, but must be able to receive them – and may issue e-invoices voluntarily. To do so, tick “I am a small business”: the invoice is created without VAT and with the note under § 19 UStG. For the e-invoice to pass the check, you need a VAT ID (USt-IdNr.) or – without one – your tax number (Steuernummer) and commercial register entry (Handelsregister).
The tools create and check files according to the EN 16931 standard. The content is general information and not tax advice; you are responsible for the details on your invoice.
